Top 5 Video Game Kickstarter Projects I Backed That Are Possibly Coming In 2016

It's a fact that video games take a while to develop, on top of that they also take a bit longer to get into the hands of the gamer. Every possible great game needs to get started with a little funding from a  publisher, I mean that use to be true until the idea of crowd funding for video games came into play.Websites like Kickstarter and many other crowdfunding sites are making awesome game ideas possible, in a world where a publisher would dismiss the same idea because there isn't a 'market' for said idea or whatever bullshit excuse they have. I really do like the idea of crowd funding, I've had a Kickstarter account for almost four years, in those four years I have backed nineteen Kickstarter projects in confidence; fifteen of which are video game related.

In theory the idea of a developer—be that an individual or a team of them—can put an idea out there online and people have the option to fund it or not sounds awesome. I say in theory because there are 'developers' who have screwed with this perfect idea to get a little something out of it, but I'm not here to talk about the bad eggs; I'm here to shine a light—a small one but a light no less—on the good ones that I backed on Kickstarter a couple years ago and are possibly coming in 2016. I only say possibly because game development is a funny thing, I am by no means an expert on game development but I do know that anything can happen in the process of creating. In anticipation I'm am making a top five list of the games I backed in hope that I get my hands on them this year and to also put on spotlight on them as well. The funny thing is most of the games—maybe 80% of them—on this list I backed in 2013, so I've waited about 2-3 years to get my hands on them; 2016 maybe the year for these awesome games.

5.Cosmic Star Heroine

Cosmic Star Heroine is one of the interesting games I backed on Kickstarter. If Shovel Knight is the celebration of 2D platformers on the Nintendo Entertainment System then Cosmic Star Heroine is the celebration of the golden age of turned based RPGs; less om the fantasy RPGs of that era but more on the futuristic and Sc-fi RPGs like Phantasy Star. Most of the games on this list look very modern but this game looks like a game you could of played on the SNES or the original PlayStation but it is a game that is being developed right now and is hopefully coming out this year. Cosmic Star Heroine is coming to PC platforms, PS4 and PS Vita sometime in 2016, look out for it I know I am.

4.Shiness

Shiness is one of the unique games I backed in recent memory and I'm not just saying that just for the game itself, but for the people behind the game. This game is being developed in France. I find that really interesting.because when it comes to video games in France the only thing that comes to mind is Ubisoft; I mean no disrespect when I say that. To see a game with anthropomorphic and human characters in an anime style RPG made me an instant backer and fan. Reading into the background of the game, it has a very Tales game plot; which is a good thing. Then there is the actual gameplay of the game which also feels very Tales and also a little of CyberConnect2's Naruto game. You can feel a lot of inspiration from Japanese games and it is a breath of fresh air. From what I've been told from Kickstarter updates that the game is going to be available in 2016 for PC platforms, PS4, Xbox One and Wii U. The year of Shiness is coming and many other games on this list as well.

3.Mighty No. 9

It's hard not to make a list of Kickstarter games coming out in 2016 and not list Mighty No.9. Inafune left Capcom many years and has had his name attached to quite a few games under a Japanese indie developer—which he founded—known as Comcept. For fans though they weren't getting what they love Inafune for and that is Megaman. The story is that he introduced a Kickstarter for a spiritual successor of Megaman at a game convention. It did crazy money—I mean I backed it twice—enough that it's literally coming on almost every game platform; I mean they even got a publisher for the game after the fact too. This game was suppose to come out last year and was sadly delayed—multiplayer features reasons apparently—for reasons. I probably sound really negative about the game but I'm really excited; it's just my hype has decreased a little. This is probably the only game on this list that I can give a definitive release date, Mighty No.9 was coming to North America on February 9th, 2016 and worldwide on February 12th, 2016 on the platform of your choice. Like I said in the beginning of the article, anything can happen in the process of creating; Mighty No. 9 it has been delayed to Spring 2016.

2.Hyper Light Drifter

I will admit there are Kickstarter games I back just for gameplay, art style or even name recognition. Hyper Light Drifter is one of those games I backed not just for it's art style but gameplay as well. No words were ever needed when I was looking at this game, the gameplay spoke for itself. Hyper Light Drifter is a 2D action RPG with a lot of inspiration from 8-bit and 16-bit games of that era. I honestly see a lot of aspects of those early Zelda games but with a more modern take on it. I don't know what else to say I just want to play this game now. Hyper Light Drifter is aiming to release in Spring 2016 on PC platforms, PS4, PSVita, Xbox One, Wii U and Ouya.

1.Soul Saga

Soul Saga is probably the oldest project I backed on Kickstarter that I still haven't gotten my reward from yet. At the same time it's probably the one I'm most excited about, which is why it's listed as number one. JRPGs are the reasons why I am into video games and the video game industry as a whole. They bring me into a unique world that can't be be imagined in any other medium. The developer of this project is doing just that, it's a world I'm looking forward to getting into and spending many hours in this world; as well spending time with the characters. Looking at what this game is, a lot of turn-based JRPGs inspiration can be seen; Final Fantasy, Persona and Grandia are just a few I can see from my personal favorites. I know Mike from Disastercake—the developer of Soul Saga—is hard at work on it, with hope he can get the completed version game into the hands of the backers; as well as new fans of Soul Saga. Soul Saga is set to release for PC platforms on June 2016, it is also coming to PS4, PSVita and Wii U sometime after.

A lot of great games coming in 2016 thanks to Kickstarter and many other games coming over the horizon. Looking at the list I'm noticing a majority of them are RPGs; I also backed a majority of them for the PSVita version as well. I do hope anyone reading this list is a little bit more excited for 2016 and is now wanting to play at least one of these games; I know wanna play them all right now.
